Porta Flavio Rosato 2017

Our Porta Flavio red – a bold, dark-fruited Carignano from Sardinia, one of Italy’s hottest regions – was such a hit, it got us thinking. What if we asked the team at Cantina di Calasetta for a juicy-fresh rosato version?

Thrilled with the news that our customers flipped for the red, they happily sent us this vibrant pink. Like the red original, it’s made from gnarled vecchie viti – 150+ year old Carignano vines – which have never been grafted. This means they still have their original roots, a vineyard rarity. They’re also extremely low-yielding, so the fruit they produce is pure, intense, and mouthwateringly rich.

(Fun fact: Like those ancient vines, Sardinia’s people enjoy remarkable longevity. Four of the growers at the Cantina di Calasetta are over 100 years old – combined, they have nearly three centuries of winemaking experience! And, they still hand-tend the vineyards. We’re not saying this wine is the secret to eternal life, but there is definitely a benefit to indulging in it … )

Back to the wine – look forward to intense aromas of spicy strawberry, Bing cherry, and a hint of minerality. The flavors follow on with tangy strawberry and raspberry, edged by a subtle saline freshness, credited to the vineyards’ proximity to the ocean. Perfect paired with seafood or simply grilled chicken tossed with angel hair, olive oil, fresh tomatoes, garlic, and basil.
