There’s nothing we love more than exploring uncharted wine territory. Well … that, and bringing you along with us to discover delicious new things.
Today we want you to meet the intrepid Rivera family, who – after generations of making wine in Rioja – set out to tame the poor, sun-drenched soils of Utiel-Requena in Spain’s Valencia. Today, they’re proud champions of the region’s VIP grape, Bobal, which plays stars alongside Tempranillo in their beautifully mature Reserva. After a year-long slumber in oak barrels, it’s toasty, smooth, and brimming over with still-juicy, fresh red fruit notes and savory hints of spice box.
This is a perfect example of what Wine Spectator meant when they wrote: “Value should be Spain’s middle name. ... there’s no shortage of well-made vino that won’t break the bank.” Start here.
Oh, and here’s a serving tip: This is definitely a mature wine that will come into its delicious own with a robust meal. Roasted lamb with a warm chickpea/spinach side would be a very Spanish match; or try classic beef stew.
