When our California expert Clare tasted this sumptuous California red, she was instantly reminded of the currant bun (a classic British dessert pastry, made with currants and baking spices). It was so delicious, she asked the winemaking team if she could have the lot for our customers – and they graciously agreed to save every last drop for you.
Clare isn’t the only one who thought it was delightful. Judges at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition were smitten too, and gave it a double-gold medal in 2020.
Currant Bun hails from Lodi, “one of the top wine regions in the country,” where winemakers “have quietly started producing some of the state’s best wines” (vinepair.com). Thanks to the excellent 2018 vintage, Lodi’s vineyards thrived, producing grapes with ripe, concentrated flavors.
Crafted with Cabernet Sauvignon and more, Currant Bun brims with juicy black currant and warm baking spice characters. Rich and succulent, it’s a treat on its own or with roasted meats or firm, aged cheeses.
