If you love Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc—but not the price of fancy Sancerre or Pouilly-Fumé—you’ll really love La Raie. This elegant Sauvignon hails from a renowned family and Reuilly, a tiny district (only 38 producers and 100 hectares of vines) that yields brilliant whites. It’s a fine Loire Sauvignon—ripe citrus flavors, hints of flint and pristine freshness—that doesn’t break the bank.
The Lafond family are very highly regarded in Reuilly. André Lafond was a vineyard worker in early ’60s France, who dreamed of seeing Reuilly restored to its former vinous glory. He started with a mere six acres of vines, which eventually grew to 15. After André’s passing in 1977, his son Claude jumped into action to keep his dad’s dream alive. He enlisted friends to help, and also created the region’s first co-op, which gave even small wine growers the chance to make and market their own wines without having to outlay enormous sums for winery equipment. His efforts won the admiration of locals and international acclaim, with Wine Enthusiast calling him “the driving force behind the renaissance of Reuilly.”
Today Claude's daughter Nathalie proudly carries on the family vision and is herself a key name in the region. She embraces their philosophy in the vineyard and winery: “Do what is needed—no more, no less—just at the right time.”
This is a truly delightful wine. Look forward to aromas of ripe gooseberry, lime and lemon zest notes, plus a classic hint of flint. On the palate: it’s crisp and elegant, with vibrant citrus flavors and a refreshing finish.
In the Loire Valley, they enjoy their Sauvignon Blanc with another local specialty: goat cheese. Other delicious pairings include fresh seafood, roasted white meats or creamy pastas.
