Bordeaux’s rare Sauvignon Gris is a pink-skinned cousin of Sauvignon Blanc, known for its richer-flavored wines. Hugh Johnson, legendary author of The World Atlas of Wine, has called Château Le Coin Sauvignon Gris (a former ‘Best-in-Class’ winner) “bloody marvelous.” We can’t wait for you to taste the excellent 2022 edition.
Winemaker Jean-Marc Sauboua (below), an alumnus of Bordeaux’s legendary Château Haut-Brion and a previous International Wine Challenge White Wine of the Year trophy winner, is famously quality-obsessed. To source the fruit for this premium white, he headed to Ludovic Roussillon’s Château Le Coin, where the low-yielding old vines help produce extra-concentrated flavors. He also barrel fermented a portion of the estate-grown fruit for a little extra richness.
In the glass, look for vibrant lime and gooseberry aromas, leading to grassy citrus and passion fruit flavors. Decanter judges praised a previous release for its “attractive nose of well-defined rhubarb and pear aromas. On the palate it shows a fresh and lively acidity.” Indeed, there’s a lovely freshness that makes this a fine choice for sipping solo. Or, pair it with classic French fare—try a tarte au saumon fumé (smoked salmon tart), roasted chicken with tarragon herb jus and more.
