There are so many wonderful, lesser-known estates to explore in Bordeaux, and we’re thrilled to introduce you to Château La Mauberte. The Sorges family have crafted elegant, great-value wines here for decades, and they couldn’t have asked for a better vintage to celebrate their 60th anniversary than 2018.
Critics across the globe are raving about this exceptional year. The near-perfect, extra-long harvest season allowed the fruit to ripen and develop richer, more complex flavor—and not just at the top châteaux, but at small, family-owned estates like Château La Mauberte. “2018 is unquestionably an extraordinary vintage,” writes Master of Wine Julia Harding.
You’ll taste the proof with this lovely release. A classic blend of Merlot (60%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (40%), it boasts a Gilbert & Gaillard gold medal and layers of ripe, red fruit aromas and flavors.
Of course, that’s also due in part to the hard work and dedication of the Sorgues family. Back in 1957, Christian Sorges purchased 20 hectares of vines in Landerrouat. Today, Château La Mauberte has expanded from 20 to nearly 300 hectares of vines, and the family has brought on Thomas Duclos to consult in the cellar. He’s a big name in the region and works with some of Saint-Emilion’s illustrious Grand Cru Classés.
Wondering what to serve with this classic Bordeaux? The Sorges family recommend starting the evening with a plate of charcuterie and cheese. Try local selections like Saint Albray or classics matches, such as Cheddar or Camembert. For the main course, try poultry dishes like duck confit, grilled chicken or pan-seared turkey breast.
