“While red Bordeaux may be more popular, wine drinkers willing to sample a second color will find the white can be just as delicious, compelling and complex.”
That’s The Wall Street Journal’s wine critic, Lettie Teague, and we agree with every word. White Bordeaux remains something of an insider’s secret – if you’ve never tried one, this beauty from third-generation sisters Sylvie and Marie Courselle (who come from a family with more than a century of winemaking experience) is your perfect introduction.
It’s a classic blend of Sauvignon and Sémillon, from the family’s five-acre Clos Sainte Anne vineyard, planted just over 40 years ago. With its southern-facing slopes (real sun traps) and deep gravel soils, it’s perfectly sited to grow concentrated, ripe grapes. 2017 was a historically small harvest thanks to springtime frosts, but all that sunlight really helped and the Courselles were still able to make a gorgeous white the likes of which may prove difficult to find elsewhere ... a real testament to their winemaking skill.
Look forward to the intense, aromatic freshness of Sauvignon Blanc, rounded out by the rich, honeyed character of Sémillon. Smooth, well-balanced and complex, this Bordeaux Blanc makes a stylish aperitif, or a fine match for roasted chicken.
Bordeaux fans are snapping up what they can of the painfully small 2017 vintage. Hurry to secure your share.
